Pitfalls of Data Destruction and Sanitation

James Martens

By 2020, The International Data Corporation (IDC) predicts the digital information present in the world to jump from 4.4 zettabytes (ZB) to 44 ZB. The emergence of Big Data and persistence of Cloud based storage/services being major contributors. This data is not a problem to store; it is, however, a massive problem to manage and erase.

From device to data centre we will explore how to truly sanitize data (and prove it). We will start with simple magnetic hard drives and advance to satisfying EUGDPR’s demands of “the Right to be Erased/Forgotten” at a database and file level. With each technology we will explore common misconceptions of sanitation methods, how to avoid them, and how to truly sanitize the data.
